Overview
Stony Man Mountain Overlook is a classic Skyline Drive stop at milepost 38.5, just north of Skyland. It’s the kind of pullout you can cruise into, step out, and be staring at wide-open mountain scenery within seconds.
What You’ll See
Expect broad western and southern vistas, including sightlines toward the Stony Man summit and the Shenandoah Valley. It’s a crowd-pleaser for golden-hour light and a quick photo break.
Why Stop Here
Beyond the easy views, this pullout doubles as a handy access point for nearby trails in the Little Stony Man area. If you want a short walk to more dramatic cliffs, you can start from the same parking area.
Good to Know
- The lot is described as large but it still fills at peak times.
- There are no restrooms here; the closest facilities are at Skyland (seasonal).
- If your target is the main Stony Man summit, start from the separate Stony Man Parking Area near Skyland (mile 41.7) and follow the park’s signed route.

Sunset is especially nice thanks to the west-facing views. Arrive early or on weekdays to skip the Skyline Drive rush, particularly in peak foliage season. Midday on weekends tends to be the busiest.
