Mirador de Mataznos

Overview

Mirador de Mataznos is a classic roadside lookout on TF‑21 in La Orotava (around km 19) and an easy add to any Teide drive. It’s open 24/7 and sits in a belt of mountain woodland, making it a quick, rewarding pull‑off rather than a full stop.

What You’ll See

Expect broad views from El Rincón across the Orotava Valley to the slopes of Tigaiga and, when conditions are clear, Mount Teide itself. On some days you’ll watch the north coast dissolve into a rolling “sea of clouds” below—great drama with almost no effort.

Nature Notes

You’re surrounded by a mix of heather, laurel‑leaf cistus, strawberry tree and other mountain flora. In late spring to early summer (May–June), look for the park’s headline blooms like towering red Teide bugloss and swathes of white broom along the high roads. Keep an eye out for small wildlife: Tenerife blue chaffinch, Atlantic canary and Berthelot’s pipit are regulars, and lizards often bask on warm rocks.

There’s a small parking area, an adjacent bus (guagua) stop, and interpretive panels. No toilets here—plan ahead. Most visitors treat it as a quick photo stop (about five minutes) before continuing up or down TF‑21.

Light is softer and views are cleaner early morning or late afternoon. Midday tends to be the busiest window, especially on weekdays, so time your pull‑off accordingly. Weather at altitude shifts fast: sunny and dry overall, but winds can kick up and winter mornings run chilly—bring layers, sun protection and water.
