Alto de Guamaso Loop

Overview

Alto de Guamaso is a short, easy volcanic‑cone ramble with outsized views across the La Orotava Valley and, on the right day, a dreamy “sea of clouds.” Officially, this is a linear trail rather than a loop. The signed route runs from the TF‑24 road (km 42.3) to El Portillo, covering about 2.9 km one way and taking roughly 1 hour 30 minutes.

Route and Terrain

From the pullout near km 42.3 on TF‑24, the path circles the flanks of a cinder cone and dips into its crater on side paths before trending toward El Portillo. Expect gentle grades (about +76 m / −121 m) between roughly 2,019 and 2,086 meters elevation. Underfoot it’s classic Teide pumice and cinders—firm but dusty in dry spells.

What You’ll See

This cone is a tidy geology sampler: look for scattered volcanic bombs on the slopes and a clear transition from Canarian pine into high‑mountain scrub around the crater rim. Birdlife can be lively—watch and listen for Canarian chiffchaff, Berthelot’s pipit, spectacled warbler, blue chaffinch, and blue tit.

Best Times to Hike

Weather rules the show here. At ~2,000 m the sun is intense, the wind can bite, and cloud banks ebb and flow. For photography, days with a developed cloud layer deliver the most dramatic “above the clouds” panoramas; afternoons or evenings often produce that effect, though mornings can deliver it too. On clear, calm days, expect big, crisp views but harsher light.

Logistics and Tips

• Start at TF‑24 km 42.3 and finish at El Portillo (or simply turn around to make it an out‑and‑back). Parking is at the TF‑24 pullout or by El Portillo/Visitor Centre.
• Wayfinding is straightforward on the cone; follow the Sendero 14 signs and obvious paths. Check current conditions before you go and bring layers, water, sunscreen, a hat, and sturdy footwear.
• Want more mileage? A longer circular outing links Alto de Guamaso with the GR‑131 and tracks around Montaña Roja back to El Portillo (about 13.5 km, plan 4–5 hours).

Sendero 14 has been listed as “not officially approved” at times—status can change—so verify current access. Temporary closures can occur in high fire risk or severe weather. Pet rules are strict in the park; assume no dogs on this route unless assistance‑dog regulations apply and you’ve confirmed current policy.
