Mirador Laguna Amarga is a small roadside viewpoint above a lake on Torres del Paine’s eastern approach. The roofed platform is close to the road, with parking on the lake’s south side, so this is a short stop rather than a walk. It sits outside the park boundary, about 5 km east of the Laguna Amarga entrance. The route from Puerto Natales comes via Cerro Castillo on Ruta 9 and Y-156.

When the Torres showThe view looks across the lagoon toward the Torres and the snowy massif.

The view looks across the lagoon toward the Torres and the snowy massif. On a calm, clear morning the peaks can reflect almost perfectly in the water. Wind breaks the reflection, and cloud can hide the towers, so the classic view depends on conditions. For a photo, include the water below the ridge; the reflection makes the scale of the peaks easier to read.

A bitter name and a pale shoreAmarga means “bitter.” The lake’s alkaline water is the explanation commonly given for its name.

Amarga means “bitter.” The lake’s alkaline water is the explanation commonly given for its name. Along parts of the shore, pale calcium-carbonate stromatolites form layered, bulbous shapes built by calcareous algae. They give the lagoon a geological detail worth noticing beyond the mountain view.

A basin shaped by iceLaguna Amarga and nearby Lake Sarmiento occupy the same basin, enclosed by glacial moraine.

Laguna Amarga and nearby Lake Sarmiento occupy the same basin, enclosed by glacial moraine. Beneath it are rocks of the Cerro Toro Formation. The lagoon’s mineral-rich water and unusual shoreline make it look different from the park’s better-known glacial lakes.

A chance of flamingosFlamingos have been reported around the lagoon, sometimes with the Torres behind them.

Flamingos have been reported around the lagoon, sometimes with the Torres behind them. Treat them as a bonus rather than a reliable sighting; the short stop is worthwhile for the lake and mountain view on its own.
