Refugio Dickson

Overview

Set on the shore of Lago Dickson at the farthest reach of the O Circuit, Refugio Dickson blends wilderness drama with just‑enough comforts. Think big views of the Dickson Glacier and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, lush vegetation around camp, and the relief of a hot shower after a long stage.

Getting There

Dickson is reached on foot: from Camping Serón it’s roughly 19 km (about 6 hours on easier terrain), or from Vértice Los Perros in the other direction. On arrival, check in with the rangers at the on‑site ranger cabin before settling in.

Sleeping Options

Inside the refugio you’ll find about 27 dorm beds (bedding provided). Outside, two camping areas can host around 100 people total—one for your own tent and another with pre‑set rental tents (mats and cold‑resistant sleeping bags). Rentals must be booked in advance.

Facilities & Comforts

• Showers and bathrooms are separated by gender; hot water typically runs from mid‑afternoon (around 2–4 pm) until 10 pm. Don’t expect hot water in the sinks, and don’t flush toilet paper.
• Campers have access to additional toilets and hot showers in a separate building.
• There’s a heated cooking room with tables, sink, and drying rack. Cooking is indoors only—no stoves at outside picnic tables.
• Power outlets exist but rely on a generator, so charging can be hit‑or‑miss. There is no Wi‑Fi.
• Potable water is available for refills, and trash cans are provided.

Food, Drink & Resupply

The restaurant serves an American‑style breakfast, set menus for lunch and dinner, and packed lunches for the trail. A small bar pours beer and wine. The shop carries snacks, basic hygiene items, simple supplies, and a few souvenirs; pizza or hamburgers are sometimes available for those not on meal plans. Vegetarian, vegan, and celiac options can usually be arranged with prior notice.

What Makes It Special

This is one of the most scenic overnights on the circuit—remote, quiet, and ringed by ice and water. A short amble to the lakeshore rewards you with head‑on glacier views that feel a world away from the park’s busier corners.

Practicalities & Costs

Check‑in opens at 1:00 pm. For the 2025–2026 high season, expect ballpark prices like: camping at Vértice sites around $12–$14 USD per person; a made bed with half board around $190 USD; a full‑board camping package (tent, mat, sleeping bag) around $221 USD. Full board is typically about $100 and half board about $68. Reserve ahead—peak dates book out.

Best Time to Visit

Aim to arrive early‑to‑mid afternoon: you’ll beat the dinner rush, secure shower time within the hot‑water window, and have daylight for a stroll to the lakeshore. Beds and meal slots are limited in peak season, so pre‑booking is key whether you’re camping or staying in the refugio.

Rules & Etiquette

Stake tents aggressively—winds can be fierce even among the shrubs. Camping on the beach is prohibited. Follow the posted bathroom rules, and if meal times shift, go with the flow—resupply is hard this far out.
