Linnet Lake

Overview

A tiny, tranquil lake tucked just north of the townsite and below the Prince of Wales Hotel, Linnet Lake is all about an easy stroll, birdsong, and postcard views. A paved loop circles the water, making this a quick but satisfying leg-stretcher that rarely feels crowded.

• Classic perspectives of the Prince of Wales Hotel, Middle Waterton Lake, and surrounding peaks.
• Interpretive panels that add context on nature and history as you go.
• Wildflowers in spring and summer, plus regular bird activity (kingfishers and other songbirds show up).

The Walk

The loop is about 1 km and typically takes 20–30 minutes. It’s paved and level, though a few sections can feel a bit rough. Benches dot the route, and there are picnic tables near the parking area—perfect for a low-key break.

Wildlife & Nature

This is a pleasant spot for casual birdwatching, with frequent sightings around the lake and shoreline. Keep your eyes open along the cattails and shrubs for small birds and occasional surprises on the water.

Logistics

Park at the Middle Waterton Lake boat launch (just north of the hotel); this lot serves Linnet Lake as well. Washrooms are available at the parking area during warmer seasons. Note that the nearby boat launch and docks are for Middle Waterton Lake, not Linnet Lake. Signs at times warn of swimmer's itch—skip the dip here.

Good to Know

• There’s a path from the parking area up toward the Prince of Wales Hotel for an elevated viewpoint.
• The loop is open year-round, but the pathway is not maintained in winter.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through fall is prime: wildflowers are out and washrooms are typically open. Even on busy days, this loop stays relatively quiet. Winter is doable for a quick walk, but expect unmaintained conditions.
