Perched above Oneloa (Ironwoods) Beach along the Kapalua Coastal Trail, this bluff-top overlook dishes out big ocean panoramas—turquoise bay below, the lava fin of Makaluapuna Point (aka Dragon’s Teeth) to the west, and Moloka‘i hovering on the horizon. It’s a low-effort, high-reward stop that feels wild despite being next to a gated condo community.

• Rugged lava coastline with thundering surf and long sightlines up the West Maui shore.
• In winter, frequent humpback spouts and breaches offshore; sunsets can glow here when the trades push clouds past the cliffs.

Getting There & Parking

Use the public access for Oneloa (Ironwoods) Beach/Kapalua Coastal Trail and walk a short distance to the bluffs. Parking is limited to a small public lot by the gated residences and fills fast—arrive early and don’t block driveways. Leave nothing visible in your car.

Best Time to Visit

• Sunrise or golden hour for softer light and fewer people.
• December–March offers the best odds for humpback whale action offshore.
• Skip stormy or high-surf days—the shoreline rocks and informal paths get slick, and spray can soak gear.

Wildlife to Watch For

Humpback whales in winter are the star. You might also spot spinner dolphins on calm mornings offshore and green sea turtles near nearby reefs.

Photography Tips

Bring a wide-angle for the coastline and bay, and a longer lens (200–400mm) if you’re chasing whale shots. A circular polarizer helps tame glare and deepen the water’s color.

West Maui Scenic Drive Context

North of Kapalua the road narrows with cliffside stretches, blind curves, and scarce guardrails. Many drivers love the views but not the tight lanes. If that sounds stressful, consider turning around near Nakalele rather than committing to the full loop—daylight, dry weather, and an unhurried pace make this drive far better.
