Lahaina Jodo Mission

Overview

A century-old Japanese Buddhist temple community (founded 1912; at this beachfront site since 1931) that once showcased a three-tiered pagoda, bell tower, and a 12‑foot bronze Amida Buddha—long cited as one of the largest of its kind outside Asia. The setting by the sand made it a quiet, contemplative stop on any West Maui drive.

What changed after the 2023 fire

The August 8, 2023 Lahaina wildfire destroyed the temple buildings. The Great Buddha statue and the temple bell survived. Leaders have discussed rebuilding approaches while navigating recovery rules, and services for the congregation have been supported at Wailuku Jodo Mission in the interim.

What you’ll see now

Conditions and access can change during recovery. Expect limited or no on‑site facilities and possible restrictions around the property near Baby Beach. If access is permitted, go with a mindset of quiet reflection and respect for an area in healing. The shoreline location offers views toward nearby islands and the West Maui Mountains when conditions allow.

Planning basics

• Cost: Free; donations have been appreciated when the grounds are open.
• Parking: Scarce street/shoulder parking at the end of Ala Moana Street; it fills quickly, especially during community events.
• Facilities: No public restrooms on site or at adjacent Baby Beach; Launiupoko Beach Park (about 5–10 minutes south) has restrooms and showers.

Best time to visit

During recovery, verify current access before you go. Historically, arriving early made parking easier, and seasonal observances like O‑bon in July and autumn services in September drew crowds; if those resume, plan ahead and come early.

Etiquette

Keep voices low, be mindful of the adjacent cemetery and nearby homes, and stick to open areas only. When buildings reopen, modest dress, respectful photography, and removing shoes before entering any hall are the norm. Small cash donations help support the mission when gates are open.
