Pros & cons
CONS
- Destroyed in the August 2023 Lahaina wildfires; site remains closed
- No on-site amenities available; respect recovery closures and signage
Overview
Once a cornerstone of Lahaina’s Chinese community, this early‑1900s society hall and Taoist temple was restored in the 1980s and reimagined as a small, story‑packed museum. It sat right on Front Street and made for an easy 30–60 minute cultural stop.
Current status (2025)
The building and most artifacts were lost in the August 8, 2023 wildfires. The site is closed and within an area focused on recovery. Do not attempt to visit; follow all posted closures and detours.
What it was like before the fire
Inside, exhibits traced Chinese immigrant life on Maui, and the old cookhouse functioned as a tiny theater that screened some of the earliest films of Hawai‘i by Thomas Edison. Highlights included ornate historical pieces and engaging, docent‑led context—compact but memorable.
How to approach it now
Treat it as a moment of remembrance rather than a stop. If you’re interested in the history, look for updates from the Lahaina Restoration Foundation and the Wo Hing Foundation as preservation work evolves.
Best time to visit
Not applicable while closed. Historically, it operated roughly 10 am–4 pm (with one weekday closure) and worked well as a quick drop‑in while exploring Lahaina.
