Overview

A classic riverside stop in the Madison–Old Faithful corridor, the Firehole River Picnic Area is small, scenic, and easy to love. You’re picnicking right along a geothermally warmed river that drains major geyser basins—steam often lingers in cool air and the views run up and down a pine-lined valley.

What You’ll Find

• 12 first-come picnic tables and a vault toilet. No running water—bring what you need.
• A short walk to the river for views and a bit of quiet between busy marquee sights.
• Gas stoves and self-contained charcoal grills are fine; campfires only where grates are provided (not here).

Why It’s Interesting

The Firehole River carries warm, silica-rich water from the park’s big geyser basins—visible proof you’re inside an active volcanic and hydrothermal system. It’s one of the few places where a picnic can come with steam drifting off a river.

Wildlife & Safety

Bison and elk work this corridor often. Keep proper distances, secure food the moment you’re done, and pack out all trash. Stay on established surfaces near the river—ground can be unstable in this thermal region. Swimming/wading is only allowed at the designated Firehole Swimming Area when it’s open; elsewhere is prohibited and unsafe.

Fires, Water, and Facilities

Expect a vault toilet and tables; no potable water here. If you need fill-ups, Madison is the only picnic area in the park with drinking water. Use a stove or self-contained grill; no campfire rings at this site.

Best Time to Visit

Arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm for easier parking and softer light. Midday tends to be busiest, especially late morning to early afternoon on Fridays. Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms and plenty of insects by the river—plan accordingly.
