Nez Perce

Overview

A quiet, tree-shaded pull-off near Lower Geyser Basin, Nez Perce Picnic Area is where you come to exhale between geyser stops. It’s set by a cool, gently flowing creek/river, so lunch comes with the sound of water and a decent chance of bison roaming the valley beyond. It’s simple, scenic, and a welcome break from the boardwalk crowds.

What You’ll See

• A calm stretch of water beside the tables—great ambiance and summer cooling for kids who like to dip toes in shallow flow (always supervise).
• Open meadows nearby where bison often wander; sometimes elk, too. Enjoy from a distance.

• 13 picnic tables and 3 fire grates.
• Vault/composting toilet; no running water. Bring drinking water and hand sanitizer.

Best Time to Visit

Evenings tend to be the sweet spot—cool light, fewer people, and softer winds. Midday is the most popular for lunch and the single restroom can bottleneck, so either arrive early, or plan a late picnic after your afternoon geyser walk.

History & Context

The name honors the Nez Perce (Nimíipuu) and their 1877 flight through this landscape. For 13 days they moved across what’s now the park—part of a 1,170‑mile journey toward Canada. The route through Yellowstone is recognized as a segment of the Nez Perce (Nee‑Me‑Poo) National Historic Trail and remains culturally significant to the Nez Perce today. Visit with respect; leave what you find.

Wildlife & Safety

This corridor is true wildlife country. Give bison a wide berth, store food properly, and never approach animals. If you plan to wander beyond the tables, stay bear‑aware and keep your distance from all wildlife.
