Madison Junction Picnic Area

Overview

Set at the confluence where the Gibbon and Firehole Rivers form the Madison, this junction-side picnic area is a convenient pause between major geyser basins and the West Entrance. The valley is scenic and often lively with wildlife, so it’s more than just a lunch stop.

Amenities & Setup

• 14 picnic tables and 3 fire grates, plenty for families or small groups.
• Toilets right at the area plus a comfort station at the east end of the lot with flush toilets and vending.
• Potable drinking water is available here—uniquely, Madison is the only picnic area in the park that offers it.
• Large vehicles tend to fit more easily here than at smaller pullouts.

Rules & Safety

• Fires only in the provided grates. Camp stoves and self‑contained charcoal grills are allowed in picnic areas.
• No overnight camping. Store all food and scented items when not in use and never feed wildlife.
• This is bear country: carry bear spray, picnic with others when possible, and back away slowly if you encounter a bear—don’t run.

Wildlife & What You’ll See

The Madison Valley frequently hosts elk and bison, with coyotes and occasional black bears moving through. Bring binoculars, give animals plenty of space, and drive slowly—wildlife often crosses the road near the river.

Best Time to Visit

Midday is the busiest. Aim for breakfast or a late-afternoon/early-evening meal for easier parking and better wildlife activity. If you’re entering or exiting via the West Entrance, it’s an ideal first or last stop to refill water and regroup before the next leg.
