Tucked along the Yellowstone River in Hayden Valley, Nez Perce Ford Picnic Area is a calm, scenic pause between Fishing Bridge and Canyon (near Mud Volcano). It sits a little off the main road, so you get river sounds, open-valley views, and fewer tour-bus vibes—perfect for a slow lunch break.

What to Expect

You’ll find around 20 picnic tables spread between shade and sun, with easy river access and broad sightlines across the valley. There’s one vault/composting toilet and no running water. It’s a simple setup that trades amenities for setting—and the setting wins.

Wildlife & Why It’s Special

Hayden Valley is famous for wildlife. From the tables you can scan for bison moving through the valley and, at times, bears crossing the river. Birders do well here—bring binoculars or a spotting scope for the nearby great blue heron rookery and other water-loving species.

• Cooking: No fire grates here. Camp stoves (liquid/gas) and self‑contained charcoal grills are allowed.
• Food storage: Keep all food, coolers, and trash secured when not in immediate use.
• No overnight camping in picnic areas.

Best Times to Visit

• Mornings are lovely: soft light on the river and wildlife still moving through the valley.
• Midday is the likeliest time to find more people at the tables; early or late helps with both parking and ambience.
• Dawn and dusk remain the best windows for wildlife activity in Hayden Valley.

Navigation Tip
