Pentagonal Spring is a small hydrothermal hot spring—one of the countless features powered by Yellowstone’s volcanic heat. Expect steaming water, mineral edges, and that surreal, otherworldly feel you get throughout the park’s geyser basins.

This is a look-and-go stop: a compact thermal pool with classic hot-spring character. Colors and patterns in hydrothermal areas often come from minerals and heat-loving microbes, which is part of the appeal across Yellowstone’s basins.

Safety & Etiquette

Thermal ground is thin and dangerous. Stay on designated boardwalks and marked trails, keep kids close, and never step off the path. Wildlife—especially bison and elk—often wanders near basins; give them plenty of space.

Facilities

There are no facilities at the spring itself. Plan to use restrooms at nearby basin parking lots or designated picnic areas along the corridor; most are vault toilets with no running water. Only the Madison Picnic Area offers potable water taps. Early in the season, some vault toilets may be locked or snowed in—use the main village hubs when in doubt.

• Bring your own water and snacks; there’s no shade, seating, or services at the feature.
• Grab a basin trail guide at kiosks or visitor centers to help identify individual features by name along your walk.
• Expect brief, stop-and-observe pacing—this isn’t a long-stay viewpoint.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon to dodge the busiest periods at nearby popular basins and to catch softer, more flattering light for photos. If you’re touring multiple thermal areas in a day, plan restroom breaks at major hubs or signed picnic areas between stops.
