Turquoise Pool is a classic hot spring in the Midway Geyser Basin—small in footprint, big in color. Named by the 1878 Hayden Expedition, it holds steady at roughly 142–160°F, which keeps the water clear and intensely blue. It’s a tranquil counterpoint to its showier neighbors.

Expect a luminous, gem-like blue pool with pale, mineral-lined edges and nearby microbial mats adding subtle oranges and browns. It’s often overshadowed by Grand Prismatic Spring and the vast Excelsior Geyser crater, but up close, Turquoise Pool has a serenity they don’t.

The basin’s vivid hues come from thermophiles—heat-loving microorganisms—and mineral-rich waters. Hotter, clearer centers appear blue; cooler margins foster colorful microbial mats. Turquoise Pool’s consistently high temperature keeps that striking blue center dominant.

You’ll see Turquoise Pool along the Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk, an easy, mostly flat 0.7-mile loop. The parking area serves the whole basin, and there are restrooms at the trailhead. Stay on the boardwalk—the ground is fragile and the water is scalding.

Midway gets busy, especially on summer weekends. Aim for early morning or late afternoon for easier parking and calmer winds that keep steam from smothering the view. On clear, sunny days the colors pop; on cool or cloudy days, expect more steam.
