Imperial Geyser Trail

Overview

This is the Yellowstone hike for folks who like a little payoff after the crowds peel off. The Imperial Geyser Trail is an easy, mostly flat out-and-back that continues past the wildly popular Fairy Falls to a quieter backcountry geyser—and a bonus, frequently erupting neighbor called Spray Geyser. It’s about 6.7 miles total (round trip) with roughly 367 feet of gain. Expect a wide gravel approach that shifts to singletrack after the Fairy Falls junction.

Route Highlights

From the Fairy Falls parking area, cross the bridge over the Firehole River and follow the broad, bike-legal path toward Fairy Falls. About 0.6 miles in, a short signed spur leads to the Grand Prismatic Overlook—take it for the park’s best sanctioned view of the rainbow pool, then rejoin the main route. At roughly a mile, turn left onto the singletrack to reach 197-foot Fairy Falls, a tall ribbon of water framed by lodgepole regrowth from the 1988 fires. Keep going another half-mile-plus to reach Imperial Geyser’s vivid blue pool and steaming runoff. Follow the runoff channel another one-eighth mile to Spray Geyser, which pops off frequently.

What You’ll See

This hike blends headline attractions with quieter moments: thermophiles painting Imperial Creek, fine obsidian-like grit underfoot, and carpets of summer wildflowers through young lodgepole pine forest. Wildlife commonly wanders these flats—give anything with horns or claws room and then some.

Difficulty and Timing

Despite the mileage, the grade is gentle and friendly for most hikers. Plan about 2.3 hours if you’re moving efficiently; add time for the overlook, lingering at the falls, and waiting on geyser activity. An 8.8-mile loop variant returns via meadows and Fountain Flat Drive if you want to stretch it.

Best Times to Hike

June through October is the sweet spot. Early mornings beat the parking crunch and give calmer air for Grand Prismatic views. Midday can be hot—there’s limited shade—so bring sun protection. Early summer brings mosquitoes; late shoulder seasons can mean muddy patches or even icy stretches (traction helps in fall cold snaps). Crowds thin dramatically beyond Fairy Falls, so the last leg to Imperial often feels surprisingly peaceful.

Practical Tips

• Water isn’t available—carry what you need.
• No pets on this hike. The initial approach allows bikes, but not the singletrack to Fairy Falls or the thermal features.
• Parking is limited; arrive early or use Fountain Flat Drive and walk in from there. The final approach near Spray may include a shallow warm-stream crossing depending on conditions.
• This is thermal terrain—stay on signed trails and boardwalks, and give all features a wide berth.
• Bear spray is smart, and bug spray is your friend in early summer.
