Park at signed pullouts along the one-way Firehole Lake Drive. The two main boardwalk areas and major geyser stops (including Great Fountain and White Dome) have small pullouts or viewing areas adjacent to the features.
Stay on boardwalks; thin hydrothermal crust and 150°F+ waters can cause severe burns. Expect steam and wet boards, and occasional hot runoff across or beside the road. Wildlife may block paths or roads—keep distance. Seasonal closures are common.

This is the quick-hit thermal walk you want when the big basins feel jammed. Firehole Lake Drive is a one-way scenic spur through the Lower Geyser Basin with two short, mostly level boardwalk areas that let you nose right up to vivid hot springs, geysers, and namesake hot lakes. Expect a relaxed, low-effort stroll paired with easy pullouts. Plan 30–60 minutes for the loop with brief boardwalk stops, longer if you linger or wait on an eruption.
What You’ll See
North-to-south, you’ll pass colorful springs like Lemon Spring and Firehole Spring, then a short boardwalk around Surprise Pool. The marquee stops are Great Fountain Geyser (long intervals, huge eruptions when they happen) and White Dome Geyser, a stark white cone that erupts frequently enough that a short wait often pays off. The can’t-miss walk is the linked boardwalk network by Hot Lake, Black Warrior Lake, Firehole Lake, and Steady Geyser—constant sputtering, dark mineral-stained water, bright microbial mats, and even a small steaming cascade running beneath footbridges. On cool days, expect dramatic curtains of steam.
Difficulty and Length
The boardwalks are short and flat with minimal elevation. Each of the two main boardwalk areas typically takes about 10 minutes to stroll at a photo-friendly pace. Surfaces can be damp from runoff, and narrow sections may slow passing.
Tips and Tradeoffs
If you’re chasing action, keep an eye on White Dome—its frequent, brief plays are the best odds here without a long wait. Great Fountain can be spectacular but runs on multi-hour intervals, so don’t bank your schedule on catching it. The road is one-way; if you skip a pullout, you can’t easily backtrack. It’s generally quieter than the big-name basins, especially in shoulder seasons.
Safety
Stay on boardwalks and pavement—hydrothermal crust is thin and dangerous, and runoff can cross the road. Water around the boardwalks is scalding. Wildlife wanders through; give animals space and never approach.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning or sunset brings softer light, fewer people, and extra steam for atmospheric photos. It’s a smart detour when nearby areas are crowded. Be aware of seasonal closures: most park roads close to regular vehicles from early November to late April, and this side road commonly closes from around March 10 until Memorial Day for wildlife protection.
