Overview
This is Yosemite’s hub for guided adventure and the place to grab climbing support or talk through your goals with pros. The Yosemite Mountaineering School (founded in 1969) is the only guide service authorized to guide climbing inside the park, and it operates right out of Curry Village alongside the Mountain Shop. Expect a safety-first culture—guides are Wilderness First Responders or WEMTs—and a friendly, dialed team used to welcoming absolute beginners and pushing experienced climbers on classic routes.
What They Offer
- Rock climbing: half-, full-, and multi-day instruction and objectives for all levels. Classes typically run about seven hours and often start at 8:30 a.m.
- Hiking and backpacking: from custom day hikes to multi-day trips where guides handle logistics like permits, route-finding instruction, and backcountry skills.
- Winter: cross-country ski lessons and guided snowshoe/xc-ski outings based out of Badger Pass when the snow flies.
How It Works
Most sessions meet in Curry Village (and seasonally in Tuolumne Meadows) at 8:30 a.m. Group class sizes are kept small, and private days are common if you want to chase a specific route or pace. Families are welcome—kids 10–11 can join regular classes with a supervising adult, and under-10s can participate via a private lesson with an adult.
The Mountain Shop and Office Hours
The Mountain Shop in Curry Village is typically open 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. The Mountaineering School office generally runs 8:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m. Plan your pickup/returns and questions around those windows, especially if you’re starting early.
What It’s Like
Feedback consistently calls out patient, encouraging guides who tailor the day to your ability, whether that’s your first crack climb or a long, classic multi-pitch. Expect clear briefings, efficient rope management, and steady coaching. A small minority of reviews mention mismatched expectations or inattentiveness—setting clear goals up front helps ensure you get the day you want.
Wildlife & Natural Context
On guided hikes, you’ll get natural history and geology woven into the day—and you might spot wildlife (black bears do roam the Valley and meadows). Your guide will reinforce distance and food-storage etiquette so wildlife stays wild and you stay safe.
Best Time to Visit
- Summer: It’s peak season—book well ahead. Consider Tuolumne Meadows for cooler temps and alpine breezes.
- Shoulder seasons (spring/fall): Fantastic for climbing temps and fewer crowds; light varies beautifully for photos.
- Winter: Head to Badger Pass for snowshoe and cross-country days when storms permit.
- Weekdays generally see lighter demand than weekends; mornings beat the heat and give you a jump on the day.
Need-to-Know Tips
Bring water, snacks, and lunch—most days run long and you’ll be away from services. Confirm your meeting time and location the day before, and be honest about your experience level so your guide can choose the right objective. If you’re aiming for a big classic, reserve early—prime dates go fast.
