Swimming and Rafting

Summer is float season when flows are safe: a popular drift starts at Stoneman Bridge and ends at Sentinel Beach. Always check current river conditions—spring water is swift and cold, and even in summer the Merced demands respect.

Wildlife and Safety

You’re in bear country. Keep all food and scented items within arm’s reach, use bear-resistant bins, never feed wildlife, and if a bear approaches, make noise to scare it away. Expect mosquitoes in warm months—repellent helps.

Best Time to Visit

• Timing: Midweek mornings are the calmest; weekend afternoons are the busiest. Arrive before 10 am for easier parking and quieter tables.
• Light: Late afternoon brings warm light on the cliffs and soft reflections on the river—nice for photos and a relaxed picnic.
• Season: Summer is prime for beach time and floating when flows drop; spring is scenic but water is frigid and dangerous.

Stretch your legs to Swinging Bridge for more river viewpoints, or use nearby paths to connect toward Yosemite Falls. Hikers can access bigger objectives nearby, like the Four Mile Trail up to Glacier Point.
