The Acadia Gateway Center is a visitor and transit hub on Route 3 in Trenton, on the mainland about three miles north of Mount Desert Island. Its roomy 11,000-square-foot building is a useful first stop if you want maps, local advice or a car-free way into Acadia. Plan on orientation and transit help, not a museum visit.

The center is a major park-and-ride for the fare-free Island Explorer, which connects Acadia destinations with nearby towns when it is in season. You need an Acadia entrance pass to ride into the park. Service is seasonal, so check the current routes and dates before building a day around it. There are 300 day-use spaces, ten for oversized vehicles and 18 EV charging stations. Seven accessible spaces are near the building.

Staff can help with park and regional information, maps, bus schedules and entrance passes. There is a small Park Store, a waiting area, accessible public restrooms, a bottle-filling station, Wi-Fi and self-service food and drink. Treat the vending as a backup, not lunch. The courtyard has displays about Acadia and Downeast Maine, and ranger programs are offered on the back porch in summer and fall.

The center opened in May 2026 as part of a transportation strategy more than two decades in the making, aimed at improving mobility and reducing traffic impacts on Mount Desert Island. That purpose still defines the visit: get oriented here, then spend your time in the park rather than looking for information or parking once you are on the island.
