Carroll Homestead

Carroll Homestead is a preserved early-19th-century farmstead on the wooded west side of Mount Desert Island. The modest house and yard show how families lived here before tourism reshaped the island. It is a compact history stop, not a grand house museum or a long hike. The best visit is when a ranger has the house open, though the grounds and outdoor interpretation still make sense on their own. Tours run seasonally, with family programs in summer; check the park calendar if seeing inside matters to you.

John and Rachel Carroll moved into the house in 1825 with their two young daughters. It began as a nearly square 21-by-25-foot building, with a fieldstone foundation, hand-hewn beams and a large interior brick fireplace. The family later expanded it as children and other relatives joined the household. Its modest scale is part of the point: this was a practical home built for work, not a showpiece.

The Carrolls kept cows, pigs and chickens, planted crops and gardens, and raised sheep and flax to make their own wool and linen cloth. Food from the woods, ocean and lakes rounded out what the farm produced. John earned cash as a mason when the household needed something it could not make itself. The rooms and farm setting make that mixed subsistence life easier to picture than another timeline on a wall.

Their son Jacob went to sea at 14, crossed the Atlantic five times and circumnavigated the globe once before returning to the homestead. He and Rebecca raised ten children here. Jacob's schooner Helen carried lumber, fish, granite and lobsters in the coastal trade. When the house is open, the furnished rooms and household exhibits bring those family stories down to a human scale.

From the main parking area, take the wooded footpath or follow the gravel drive to the closer accessible parking and ramp. The grounds are uneven, and the house has small door thresholds and uneven floors, so the ramp does not remove every mobility challenge. Two portable toilets are near the accessible parking area, including one wheelchair-accessible unit. No food or drinking-water service is listed for the homestead, so come prepared. For a photo, face the long facade from the lawn and keep the trees in the frame; the two brick chimneys help show the house's full length.
