This is the first major overlook after entering on the Hulls Cove side of the Park Loop Road (Paradise Hill Road). It’s a classic Acadia warm‑up: pull over, step out, and you’re staring across island‑dotted Frenchman Bay toward the Schoodic Peninsula, with Bar Harbor and Egg Rock visible in the distance. It’s also commonly referred to as the Frenchman Bay / Gulf of Maine Overlook, and some maps label it Paradise Hill Overlook.
What you’ll see
- Broad ocean views over Frenchman Bay, sprinkled with the Porcupine Islands.
- Distant landmarks like Egg Rock (and its lighthouse) and the Bar Harbor waterfront.
- On the water: frequent boat activity—sailboats, kayaks, and working lobster boats.
The vibe and logistics
This is a quick, photo‑forward stop—no hiking required. There’s a pullout with parking, and it’s popular because it’s right at the start of the loop. Expect turnover to be fast but spots can disappear in peak season. Rangers or volunteers are sometimes on hand with maps and basic info. There are no restrooms here.
Wildlife
You’re not in a full‑on wildlife hotspot, but keep an eye on the sky and water. Seabirds (gulls, cormorants, and occasionally osprey or bald eagles) patrol the bay, and harbor seals are sometimes spotted offshore. Binoculars make a difference, especially for distant islands and Egg Rock.
Safety note
There’s a steep path leading down toward the lower road—skip it; it can be slick and puts you near traffic. Enjoy the view from the actual overlook.
Best time to visit
- Sunrise: Hard to beat—east‑facing views and softer light make this an excellent first light stop.
- Late afternoon: Also nice for warmer tones and fewer tour crowds.
- Midday: Bright, harsh light and fuller parking; plan for a quick in‑and‑out.
- Seasonality: Park Loop Road is open to vehicles roughly April 15–Nov 30; outside that window you can still reach the area by foot or bike.

The Island Explorer bus can stop here on request, which is handy when parking is tight.
