Hemlock Bluff Lookout

Overview

Hemlock Bluff Lookout is the prize viewpoint on the 3.5 km Hemlock Bluff Trail—a compact loop through mixed forest and a notable stand of eastern hemlock that finishes with a sweeping view of Jack Lake. Most hikers take 1.5–2 hours, but it’s easy to stretch that with time on the bench at the lookout.

Trail character

It’s rated easy-to-moderate by most; still, expect some huff-and-puff on the hills and careful footing where it’s damp. Dogs are allowed, and a valid park permit is required.

Logistics

Parking is at km 27.2 on Highway 60 on the south side; you’ll carefully cross the highway to reach the trailhead on the north side. There’s no on-trail service infrastructure mentioned, so plan as if there’s no water or restroom. Cell signal can be spotty—bring what you need and let someone know your plan.

Conditions to expect

After rain (and in early spring), sections can be muddy and slick—waterproof footwear helps a lot. Shade from the hemlocks keeps things comfortable on warm days, but roots and wet rock still demand attention.

This loop is generally quieter than the marquee Highway 60 hikes but can still draw a crowd on fair-weather weekends. Popularity data shows midday as the busiest window, especially on weekends, with mornings typically quieter. Many visitors spend up to 2.5 hours here if they take their time. The area is generally open 7 AM–10 PM.

Best time to visit

Aim for weekday mornings or late afternoons for lighter crowds. Trail conditions are pleasant much of the year, though spring can be muddy; September often brings fewer bugs and great footing. If it’s recently rained, expect slick spots and plan accordingly.
