Track and Tower Trail Lookout

Overview

This is the payoff on Algonquin’s classic 7.5 km Track and Tower loop: a ridge-top lookout with big views over Cache Lake. It sits roughly halfway into the circuit, reached after a stout stair climb. You’ll earn the vista, but it’s worth every step.

What You’ll See

Expect a sweeping lake-and-forest panorama from the cliff edge, especially gorgeous during fall colours. Getting there is half the fun: the trail threads boardwalks, bridges, small waterfalls/rapids, and a dam, and passes remnants tied to Algonquin’s logging/railway past.

The Hike In (Know Before You Go)

Officially a 7.5 km loop rated “difficult,” plan 2.5–3 hours with roughly 895 ft (273 m) of gain. The main climb uses a long staircase (about 130 steps). Terrain is rocky/rooty and often muddy after rain. Dogs are allowed on leash. Cell service is patchy; don’t count on it at the lookout.

Logistics

Trailhead parking is a large, paid roadside lot at km 25.0 on Highway 60. Vault toilets are at/near the trailhead, not at the lookout—go before you go. A valid day-use park permit is required, and typical hours are 7 am–10 pm.

Seasonality & Conditions

• Spring–early summer: mud and bugs—waterproof boots and repellent help.
• Summer–fall: the most popular window; arrive early as lots fill, especially during peak foliage. Trails are well marked but expect steep/rocky bits.
• Winter: open year-round; snowshoes or microspikes may be necessary when icy.

Wildlife

Algonquin is home to moose, white-tailed deer, and black bears. Sightings on busy trails are uncommon, but stay Bear Wise and give any wildlife ample space.

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings are the sweet spot for solitude and flattering side light. On weekends—particularly during fall colours—midday gets the most traffic; aim for before 9 am or late afternoon. Typical visitors linger up to 30 minutes at the lookout, so patience can pay off between waves.
