McKaskill Lake Ranger Cabin is a one-room log rental on the south shore of McKaskill Lake, set among mature red pines. Save it for a booked canoe trip: public access is from Shall Lake Access Point 17, and Ontario Parks describes the paddle as a one-day journey. A field account places the cabin above the shore with a view north across the lake.

Two bunk beds sleep four, but there are no mattresses. The cabin has a wood stove, table and chairs, plus an outside closed-in toilet; there’s no running water, electricity or cell reception. Bring drinking water, food, sleeping pads, a camp stove, cookware and utensils. Pets aren’t allowed. Book the cabin, and check whether your route also needs overnight backcountry camping reservations.

Built in 1932 as a ranger patrol cabin, it later served canoe rangers and timber technicians. Staff road access began in 1953, but that road is for park staff; visitors still reach the cabin by canoe. Friends of Algonquin volunteers restored it in 2018, replacing the roof, renewing the log chinking, repairing the windows and door, and adding the porch.
