Guide
Canoe Lake Access Point #5 is the boat-launch and visitor-service campus at the lake’s southern end, just off Highway 60 at kilometre 14.1. The boat ramp, access-point office and Portage Store are together here. If you’re heading onto Canoe Lake or into Algonquin’s backcountry, this is the practical place to start.
The Portage Store rents canoes and kayaks, offers guided trips and complete outfitting, and stocks camping gear, fishing tackle, freeze-dried food, snacks and ice. Backcountry permits are available online or by phone and can be reserved up to five months ahead, so arrange one before your launch day.
The Portage Store has operated on Canoe Lake since 1937. Its outfitting service is part of what makes this launch a useful gateway for both short lake outings and trips into the park interior.
Canoe Lake is tied to painter Tom Thomson, who drowned here on July 8, 1917. A memorial cairn stands at Hayhurst Point farther up the lake; reaching it means paddling from the access point, so it’s a separate outing rather than a quick stop beside the launch.
