This is the choose-your-own-adventure corner of Arches: a short, flexible loop that pairs the shady, photogenic slot of Sand Dune Arch with the big-sky vistas around Broken Arch. From the Sand Dune Arch Trailhead off the main park road, a signed path quickly splits—right into the cool fins and soft, ankle-deep sand to Sand Dune Arch, then back to the main trail toward Broken Arch across open desert.
Plan on about 2.3 miles total for the core loop via the Devils Garden Campground connection, or extend it to roughly 2.7–3.0 miles if you add the Tapestry Arch spur. The route is well marked and mostly flat, but the deep sand and a few minor rock moves near Broken Arch make it feel a touch tougher than it looks. Despite the name, Broken Arch isn’t broken; a crack-like fold across the top gives it character. Expect classic red rock, sandstone fins, and long views—on clear days, the La Sal Mountains peek in the distance.
The highlight—and the crowd magnet—is Sand Dune Arch. It hides between tall Entrada Sandstone fins, where the passage stays cool and shaded even in summer. It’s a fantastic photography spot, especially in softer morning or late-afternoon light. A fence blocks further travel down the slot; respect closures and retrace to the main path.
Most of the loop beyond Sand Dune Arch is fully exposed. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, and hike early or late if it’s hot. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures; winter is possible, but shaded sections can ice up. If you want a quieter add-on, include Tapestry Arch near the campground for intricate rock patterns and fewer people.
Keep an eye out for desert grasslands near Broken Arch—sit still for a few minutes and you might spot Mule Deer, especially early. And please don’t climb or jump from arches; it’s dangerous and prohibited.
Bottom line: for minimal effort you get a hidden slot-like arch, open desert scenery, and an optional bonus arch—one of the park’s best short loops. If you’re chasing solitude, start early or save the Sand Dune Arch spur for off-peak hours.
