Broken Arch

Overview

Broken Arch gets its name from a prominent crack across the span—don’t worry, it’s intact. Set between Sand Dune Arch and Devils Garden Campground, it’s a photogenic, walk-through arch that rewards a short, easy hike with fewer people than the park’s big-name stops.

The Hike

From the shared Sand Dune Arch/Broken Arch parking area, it’s about 1.2 miles round-trip on mostly flat, sandy trail. Many folks extend it into a 2.3–3 mile loop that links Broken Arch with Tapestry Arch. You can also start from Devils Garden Campground; the trail even passes through the arch itself. Expect minimal elevation gain and straightforward route-finding, with a touch of easy scrambling if you do the full loop.

What You’ll See

Broad grasslands, sandstone fins, and pockets of juniper and pinyon lead to the arch, which photographs beautifully from both sides. It’s a great spot to linger, step under the span, and frame the sky through red rock. If you have time, tag on nearby Sand Dune Arch and Tapestry Arch for a compact, high-value circuit.

Vibe and Crowds

This is a mellow, family-friendly outing with lighter traffic compared to marquee trails. Once you pass the Sand Dune Arch side spur, solitude improves quickly.

Wildlife

Desert lizards, small mammals, and birds frequent the area—look for tracks in the sand and keep your eyes peeled in the quieter stretches, especially in the cooler morning and evening hours.

Practicalities

There are no services at the arch itself. Parking is at the Sand Dune Arch lot or you can access the trail from Devils Garden Campground. Bring water and sun protection; shade is scarce and summer heat can be fierce. Footing is mostly easy but sandy.

Best Time to Visit

Go early for cool temps, soft light, and the best chance at having it to yourself. Late-day golden light is also lovely. If you’re camping at Devils Garden, sunrise or sunset strolls to the arch are a sweet, low-effort win.
