Overview

Bigfoot Pass Overlook is a quick, signed pull-off on the Badlands Loop Road (SD‑240) with classic, wide‑open Badlands scenery. It looks out over a natural pass, so you get that long, rolling view of buttes marching to the horizon—great for a short scenic break.

What You’ll See

Expect panoramic badlands—eroded buttes and layered rock formations—with an expansive sense of space. Spring can surprise you with colorful wildflowers dotting the foreground. There are two sides to the overlook; the side with the bench typically frames the better view.

Wildlife

Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep in the vicinity; signs of them (tracks, droppings) are sometimes noted near the overlook. Stay alert for rattlesnakes in warm months and give all wildlife plenty of space.

History & Name

The overlook is named for Chief Bigfoot (Spotted Elk), a Miniconjou Lakota leader known for his efforts toward peace. The name adds a layer of meaning to the stop beyond the scenery.

Best Time to Visit

Light is everything here. Sunrise and late afternoon bring the best shadows and softer color; midday is the busiest and flattest light. Spring is prime if you’re chasing wildflowers. Most visitors treat it as a 15–20 minute stop, so it’s easy to slot into any drive.

• Sun can be relentless; bring water, sun protection, and don’t expect services right at the overlook.
