Mirror Lake

Overview

A petite, glassy tarn tucked directly below the Big Beehive, Mirror Lake is the classic breather spot on the Lake Agnes Trail above Lake Louise. On calm days it earns its name, throwing back a picture‑perfect reflection of the rock dome overhead.

What You'll See

• The Big Beehive looming above the shoreline, often mirrored in the still water.
• Shaded forest crowding a small, turquoise‑tinged lake with a couple of benches to linger on.
• Trail signs at the lake pointing you onward to Lake Agnes, the teahouse, and the Beehives.

Getting There & Difficulty

Start from the Lake Agnes Trail at Lake Louise and hike uphill to reach Mirror Lake. It’s about 2.7 km (1.7 mi) one way with roughly 355 m of elevation gain before you arrive. Expect a steady grade—manageable for most—but you’ll feel it.

Wildlife

This is chipmunk central; they’re bold and busy around the lakeshore. Birdlife pops in and out of the trees, and hikers occasionally note blue birds. Larger wildlife is uncommon right at the lake.

Season & Safety

Summer and fall are the busy seasons, and the trail can be muddy or icy in the shoulder months. In winter, parts of the route cross avalanche terrain—only proceed with proper knowledge, gear, and current conditions. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent once you’re above the lakefront.

Why It’s Worth a Stop

Mirror Lake is small but photogenic, a perfectly timed pause before the final push to Lake Agnes and its teahouse. If you’re continuing to the Beehives or the Plain of Six Glaciers, this is your midpoint reset.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for early morning or late day when winds are calmer and reflections pop—and before/after the peak crowds. Mid‑morning to afternoon in peak season is the busiest and least tranquil for photos.
