Plain of Six Glaciers Trail

This 13.8 km (8.6 mi) total out-and-back starts at the Lake Louise lakeshore and follows the shoreline before climbing into the Plain of Six Glaciers valley. Continue past the seasonal Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse to the final rocky viewpoint for close views of Victoria Glacier, Mount Victoria, Mount Lefroy, and the surrounding icefields. The mapped corridor is about 6.9 km one way, and most hikers should allow 4–6 hours for the full outing.

The first several kilometres are a broad, relatively gentle lakeshore walk. After the trail reaches the far end of Lake Louise, it climbs steadily through forest and then onto more exposed, rocky terrain. The teahouse is a useful turnaround for a shorter outing (about 11.4 km return); beyond it, the route becomes rougher and is not maintained in the same way. The last section crosses loose moraine and a steep raised berm to the Six Glaciers viewpoint.

This is an out-and-back route; do not add the Highline or Lake Agnes trails unless deliberately planning the separate Lake Louise loop. The teahouse is seasonal, so carry enough food and water for the whole hike. Dogs are permitted on leash, but the upper section is uneven and exposed.

Plan for about 590 m of total climbing, with the bulk of the ascent after the lakeshore. Conditions can change quickly near the glaciers. Avalanche hazard makes the upper route unsuitable outside the normal summer hiking season, and loose rock, wet or snowy patches, steep drop-offs, and slippery footing are possible near and beyond the teahouse.
