Devil's Thumb

Devil’s Thumb via Lake Agnes is a strenuous out-and-back from the Lake Louise Lakeshore parking lot. Follow the lakeshore approach to the Chateau and the Lake Agnes Trail, climb to Lake Agnes, then continue around the lake and up the Big Beehive switchbacks. At the Big Beehive junction, take the unsigned Devil’s Thumb Route to the rocky summit. The physical corridor mapped here is about 5.9 km one way; the visitor experience is approximately 7.7 miles (12.4 km) round trip. Plan on about 5.5–6 hours for the full hike.

The route combines a maintained approach with an unmarked alpine scramble. Lake Agnes is the first major destination, with the seasonal tea house below the surrounding peaks. Beyond the lake, the Big Beehive switchbacks lead to the junction for Devil’s Thumb; the final section follows a faint path over loose rock to a steep, mildly exposed summit with broad views of Lake Louise, Lake Agnes, the Big Beehive, and Victoria Glacier.

Use offline navigation and do not mistake the Big Beehive junction or its signed route for the Devil’s Thumb turn. The last 200–300 metres are the most demanding, with loose scree, steep grades, and exposure. Sturdy footwear, layers, water, and scrambling experience are important, and the summit section should be avoided in snow, ice, or poor weather. A Parks Canada pass is required.

Parking at Lake Louise is paid and limited, and the area is accessible by transit or shuttle; follow current Parks Canada access and parking rules before setting out. Late June through September is the usual hiking season, although snow and route conditions can persist at higher elevations outside midsummer.
