“A lake's surface can hide separate layers of water. In summer, warmer, lighter water often sits above colder, denser water, and the two don't mix easily. As autumn cools the surface, that difference shrinks.”

“…Loved the commentary as you drove thru. I’m sure the app can do more than I know but the tips were very helpful. I’m gonna use it when we go to Banff next month.”

More about Protection Mountain Campground

A simple place in the mountainsProtection Mountain Campground is an open frontcountry campground on the Bow Valley Parkway…

Protection Mountain Campground is an open frontcountry campground on the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A), 15 km east of Lake Louise village. It has 72 unserviced sites, with views of Protection and Castle mountains. I’d choose it for a basic night among the mountains, not for privacy or a fully serviced stay. It’s seasonal, so check that year’s dates and reserve before you arrive; all sites are reservation-only.

What to expect at your siteYou’ll have drinking water, flush toilets, firepits, food lockers, and cooking and picnic…

You’ll have drinking water, flush toilets, firepits, food lockers, and cooking and picnic shelters. There are no hookups or showers. The open, gravelly setup can feel exposed, and some tent campers report that staking a tent is difficult. Cell coverage is limited at the campground and along the Bow Valley Parkway, so save your booking and route details before you get there.

When night fallsThe open setting makes this a good place for evening stargazing when the sky is clear.

The open setting makes this a good place for evening stargazing when the sky is clear. Campers differ on nighttime noise: some report quiet stays, while others hear freight trains or highway traffic carrying into the campground. If you’re a light sleeper, that tradeoff matters.
