Overview
Sanson Peak caps the north end of Sulphur Mountain and delivers a panoramic sweep over the Bow Valley, the Town of Banff, and surrounding summits like Mount Rundle and Mount Cory. It’s the easy win in the Rockies: ride the Banff Gondola to the summit complex, then stroll a roughly 600-meter wooden boardwalk to the peak.
Why it’s worth your time
If you want big-mountain scenery without a big climb, this is it. The historic meteorological observatory sits at the top, and interpretive signs along the way unpack the site’s science and story. Sunrise and sunset light up the valley—photographers love it.
Getting there
Most visitors take the gondola to the Sulphur Mountain summit, then follow the well-signed boardwalk to Sanson Peak. You can also earn it by hiking the Sulphur Mountain Trail (a steady switchback ascent) and then continuing on the boardwalk. Expect lots of people in peak season and on weekends.
History highlights
Named for Norman Bethune Sanson, a park meteorologist who reportedly climbed here over 1,000 times to collect weather data. The area also hosted the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station (1957–1978), a notable research site in its day.

Wildlife

Know before you go
There are no facilities at Sanson Peak itself—restrooms, food, and shops are back at the gondola summit station. It’s cooler and windier up here than in town; the boardwalk can be slick when wet.
