Vista Lake

Overview

Vista Lake is the mellow, under-the-radar stop just off Highway 93. From the pullout you get an instant postcard—clear green water cupped by forest with Boom Mountain and Storm Mountain looming above. It’s perfect for a quick wow-view or a short leg-stretcher down to the shoreline.

What You’ll See

Expect vivid, glassy water framed by mixed forest and big peaks. The descent passes rockslide rubble, opening to better and better angles on the lake. In fall, the hillsides light up with golden larches and aspens—this place really pops with color.

The Experience

It’s an easy 1 km-ish drop to the shore on a well-used trail, but don’t underestimate the return: it’s all uphill and a bit punchy, with a few narrow, airy sections. Many people consider the best photo to be from the pullout above—grab that before heading down.

Logistics

There’s a small parking pullout right off Hwy 93. Do not park on the highway shoulder—it's unsafe and ticket-worthy. There are no facilities here (no toilets, no water), so come prepared. Dogs must be leashed. If you’re bringing a paddleboard or thinking about fishing, you’ll need the appropriate Parks permits.

Wildlife & Safety

This is bear country. Seasonal group-access restrictions are sometimes implemented here in summer due to bear activity. Carry bear spray, make noise, and give wildlife space.

Make It a Bigger Day

Vista Lake is the gateway to longer, rewarding hikes: continue up to Arnica Lake or on to Twin Lakes and Gibbon Pass if you’ve got the time and legs.

Best Time to Visit

• Fall for peak color and crisp air.
• Early morning or late afternoon for softer light; sunset can be magic.
• Arrive early on weekends to snag a spot in the small lot.
• Snow-free months are ideal; expect snow/ice outside summer and early fall.
