Hoodoos Trail

Treat this as an out-and-back hike of about 5.5 miles (8.8 km) total. The physical corridor is stored once from Surprise Corner to the Hoodoos viewpoint and maps to about 4.4 km one way. Plan on roughly 115 m of elevation gain, 90 m of elevation loss, and 3 hours round trip. From Surprise Corner, the trail descends to the Bow River, follows the river below the steep cliffs of Tunnel Mountain, and climbs during the final approach to the Hoodoos viewpoint.

Expect forested trail, exposed roots, stairs near the Surprise Corner end and again about 1 km along the route, several short steep climbs and descents, and broad Bow Valley views toward Mount Rundle. The Hoodoos viewpoint is the destination; do not extend the route onto other Tunnel Mountain trails or the wider local network.

The primary trailhead is Surprise Corner at the east end of Buffalo Street, southeast of downtown Banff. It is about a 20-minute or 1.6 km walk from downtown and has limited paved parking plus a bike rack. The opposite endpoint is the Hoodoos Viewpoint and Day-use Area on Tunnel Mountain Road, which has limited paved parking, three accessible stalls, and four accessible gender-neutral outhouses. In summer, Roam public transit route 2 near Tunnel Mountain Campground can provide a return toward town; check the current schedule before relying on it.

Stay on the designated trail and viewing platforms, especially around the steep and unstable cliffs above Bow Falls. Give elk and deer plenty of space, keep dogs under physical control and on leash, and take care on roots, stairs, and steep sections. Mountain weather can change quickly, so carry water and suitable layers.
