Bindalm

Overview

Bindalm is a classic walk from the Klausbachtal valley up to a cluster of traditional alpine pasture huts. It’s a moderately difficult, well‑marked route with a fun suspension bridge and steady, non‑technical climbing near the end. Expect a pastoral finish rather than a summit—perfect if you like scenery and atmosphere over bragging rights.

Route snapshot

Start a few meters past the National Park info point at Hintersee (Klausbachhaus) and follow trail 481. You’ll pass an eagle observation point, continue straight through two crossroads, then just before the road keep left to reach and cross the suspension bridge. Continue to the Engert National Park info point, then turn left off the asphalt onto a steeper trail up to Bindalm. From Bindalm, you can return the same way or continue to the Hirschbichl pass on the Austrian border. As a reference length, continuing past Bindalm to Hirschbichl and back is about 16 km total (roughly 10 miles) and takes around 4.5 hours round trip; turning around at Bindalm shortens both distance and time.

Difficulty and safety

The park classifies this as a moderately difficult (red) hike: generally easy walking with some steeper, narrower sections. Surfaces can be slippery when wet or in shoulder seasons, especially near steeper rock faces—good shoes matter. Conditions can change quickly; check updates at the Klausbachhaus or Engert info points before you set out.

Best time to hike

Late spring through early autumn offers the friendliest weather and lighter crowds, with summer mornings best for cooler temps and a quieter start. Winter weekdays are peaceful and snowy if you’re equipped for cold and variable footing. For photos, early and late light flatter the valley and pasture.

Rules and trail etiquette

This is sensitive mountain habitat. Stay on marked paths, keep dogs leashed, don’t pick plants, pack out all trash, and skip the fires and camping. Drones aren’t allowed. Cyclists in the area should yield to hikers—expect—and give—consideration.

Logistics and tips

Parking and transit are straightforward: start at the Klausbachhaus/Hintersee info point; parking is available near Hirschbichlstraße 26, and another option noted is the Waltlmühlsäge car park. Public transit options include buses to Hintersee/Auzinger, and in season the AlmErlebnisBus serves deeper valley stops such as Hirschbichl if you’re planning a through‑hike. Bindalm’s huts are traditional alpine dairies; openings vary by season and weather, so bring layers, water, and snacks regardless.
