Hintersee Lake Loop

A gentle loop hugging the shore of emerald‑clear Hintersee, this family‑friendly stroll dishes out oversized alpine views for minimal effort. Expect a flat, well‑maintained path with benches and frequent photo stops. The loop totals roughly 2.6–3.0 km (1.6–1.9 miles) around the lake—this is a full loop, not an out‑and‑back—so it’s easy to fit in before or after a bigger outing.

What You’ll See

The water is famously clear and mirror‑calm in the early hours, with panoramic backdrops that include the surrounding Berchtesgaden peaks. Midway, the route brushes the Zauberwald (Magic Forest): a fairytale tangle of moss‑draped boulders, ancient trees, little bridges, and rushing brooks. That otherworldly landscape formed after a massive rockslide from the Hochkalter area thousands of years ago, leaving the boulder field that the forest now cloaks. Keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and a variety of birds along this section.

Route Notes

Most hikers start near the Westufer parking and simply follow the obvious shoreline path counter‑clockwise. The terrain is essentially flat with negligible elevation gain, but roots and slick patches appear after rain or in winter. Detours into the Magic Forest are short and intuitive before you rejoin the lakeside path to close the loop. Several lakeside spots offer refreshments, and in season you can rent rowboats or pedal boats for a different angle on the scenery.

Getting There

The loop sits by Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden and is reachable by public transport from the Berchtesgaden area, including a local bus that runs to Hintersee. Drivers will find multiple paid lots close to the shore; the Westufer lot is convenient and typically has toilets. No permits are required for this walk.

Best Time to Hike

It’s walkable year‑round, with spring greens, busy summer energy, crisp autumn color, and a quiet, sometimes icy winter mood. Go early or on weekdays for glassy reflections and fewer crowds; weekends and mid‑day can feel busy. In winter, expect packed snow or ice—bring small traction if conditions are cold.

Rules and Etiquette

This area sits in/along Berchtesgaden National Park. Stay on marked paths, pack out all trash, and don’t disturb wildlife. No camping or campfires, and drones are not permitted. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely—this is a low‑effort, high‑reward circuit. It’s short, so if you’re hunting for mileage it’s more of a scenic stroll than a “hike,” but the reflections, the Magic Forest, and easy access make it a must‑do warm‑up.
