Zauberwald Nature Trail

Overview

This is the park’s gentlest crowd‑pleaser: a short, mostly shaded loop that threads past emerald creeks, moss‑draped boulders, and the glassy shores of Hintersee. Recognized as one of Bavaria’s most beautiful geotopes, the forest sits atop an ancient rockslide that sculpted today’s jumble of giant blocks and dammed streams. Expect steps and footbridges in places, plus artist‑designed info boards that make it an easy win with curious kids and nature‑lovers alike.

Length and feel: roughly a 2.1 km/1.3 mi total loop with about 73 m/240 ft of up, taking 30–60 minutes depending on photo stops. Surfaces are mostly smooth paths with occasional stone steps and narrow bridges—easy walking, but not stroller‑friendly.

Route

Start at Hintersee and walk counter‑clockwise along the shore. Pick up Alte Hinterseer Straße for a short stretch, then drop right onto the signed nature trail toward the Westermayer footbridge. From there, the path climbs gently back through the Zauberwald to your starting point. Wayfinding is straightforward and well signposted.

Geology and nature highlights

Several thousand years ago, about 15 million cubic meters of rock tumbled from Schärtenspitze and Steinberg, creating today’s boulder garden and redirecting streams into the clear channels you see along the trail. Look for lush spruce‑fir‑beech forest, moss blankets on the blocks, and interpretive boards that point out botanical rarities. On the wildlife front, you’re in habitat for chamois, marmots, ibex, and soaring golden eagles—keep your eyes up and your pace unhurried.

Best times to hike

Midday can feel busy around the lake, and parking gets competitive. Aim for early morning or late afternoon/evening for softer light, calmer water reflections, and easier parking. The shady forest keeps summer heat in check, and the loop works in most seasons; after rain or in winter, expect slick spots on rock and wood.

Logistics and tips

• Parking is paid near the lake; arrive off‑peak if you can.
• Steps/footbridges mean it’s not ideal for strollers. Grippy footwear helps, especially after rain or frost.
• You may see posted notices about reptiles—watch where little hands and paws explore around warm rocks.
• The area can close after severe weather; it reopened in late July 2025 following flood damage. If conditions look rough, check current status locally.
• Want to make a day of it? A simple rowboat ride on Hintersee pairs nicely with this loop. If you’re after more mileage, there’s a longer circuit via Ramsau Church, Wartstein, Hintersee, and the Zauberwald (about 9.7 km, moderate).
