This quick pullout near the Rio Grande Village/Hot Springs area rewards a short uphill walk with big desert vistas. You’re looking across low hills to the Sierra del Carmen in Mexico, with the old Daniels Ranch site below. It’s a fast, easy stop when you’re cruising the park’s east side.

What You’ll See

• Broad views of the Sierra del Carmen and desert country. Some visitors can pick out the river corridor and even the mouth of Boquillas Canyon, but others report not seeing water at all during dry periods.
• Interpretive panels that tell the story of Daniels Ranch—an early 20th‑century farm—plus clues to the old irrigation system in the landscape.
• Birdlife along the green ribbon near the river: reports include vermilion flycatchers, wrens, thrashers, phoebes, and vultures if you linger and glass the trees and sky.

What It’s Like

It’s a short, slightly rocky path from a small parking area to the top. The overlook is simple and peaceful, with basic exhibits and no facilities. Many travelers treat it as a leg‑stretch stop with a worthwhile payoff.

Light is everything here. Sunset paints the Sierra del Carmen beautifully; sunrise is also praised for calm air and soft color. Midday brings harsh light and heat, and the exposed hilltop offers no shade. Crowds are usually light compared to the park’s headline overlooks.

• Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen—the hill is fully exposed and this corner of the park runs hot.
• Wear closed‑toe shoes; the short path is rocky and uneven.
