Overview

Cross Fissures View is a South Rim overlook reached by a very short, unpaved walk (about 0.25 miles round trip). It’s an easy add-on as you cruise the South Rim Road, and it tends to be quieter than the headline stops.

What You'll See

This viewpoint is all about the rock. Instead of a river vista, you get a tight, dramatic look at overlapping ridges, deep crevasses, and jagged cliff bands. The fractured walls are laced with contrasting intrusions that make the canyon’s structure pop from above. There are two small viewpoints here, each offering slightly different angles on the fissured terrain.

Why It’s Different

Many overlooks showcase the Gunnison River; this one doesn’t. That’s the point. Cross Fissures highlights the canyon’s architecture—cracks, spires, and angular walls—so it feels more intimate and geologic than panoramic.

Effort & Access

The trail is short and mostly flat, making it a quick stop between nearby overlooks on South Rim Road. Note that the section of road between Gunnison Point and High Point is closed to vehicles in winter; you can still reach the corridor on foot, skis, or snowshoes when conditions allow.

Seasonality & Best Time to Visit

Spring brings wildflowers along the path and around the rim.
For photography, changing light throughout the day brings out textures in the fissures; late afternoon often adds warm tones to the rock.
Evenings on the rim get chilly—pack a layer if you’re lingering for sunset or stargazing.

Wildlife

No standout wildlife specific to this overlook, but like elsewhere on the South Rim you may spot birds and the occasional mule deer along the drive.

Practicalities

There are no services at the overlook. Expect little to no cell coverage, and bring water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes for the short, unpaved path. Plan restroom stops at larger facilities along the rim.

Make the Most of It

Bundle Cross Fissures with neighboring stops like Pulpit Rock, Rock Point, and Devils Lookout to sample different flavors of the canyon in a compact stretch of road.
