Chasm View Nature Trail

Chasm View Nature Trail is a roughly 0.5-mile loop from the North Rim Campground. A short campground approach is shared on the way out and back; the loop itself crosses pinyon-juniper woodland and reaches two overlooks above the Gunnison. The Park Service lists 0.3 mile round trip, while the complete mapped walk from campground access is about 0.5 mile, in line with detailed trail descriptions. Allow about 30 minutes for both views. It is a good quick stop, though rock and a noticeable descent and climb make it less of a level stroll than the distance suggests.

The path leaves the campground through the trees and opens at North Chasm View. Continue along the rim to the second overlook, then follow the loop back through the woodland rather than turning around at the first opening. One view looks across to Painted Wall and Serpent Point; from the other, look upstream into the tight bends of The Narrows. At the rim, leave some pinyon-juniper in the edge of your photo frame; it helps show the depth of the gorge.

Painted Wall is Colorado’s tallest cliff, a 2,250-foot face of dark gneiss and schist crossed by broad pink bands. Those bands are pegmatite, lighter rock injected into the older dark stone. Some pegmatite crystals can grow to several feet long. The wall is easier to read from across the canyon: the pale streaks run through the darker face instead of sitting on top of it.

The walk starts in pinyon-juniper and passes the scrubby woodland typical of the canyon rim before it breaks into open views. The Park Service lists swifts, swallows and raptors as birds to watch for above the canyon; they are possibilities, not guaranteed sightings. The trail’s interpretive markers add context to the short woodland stretch.

The unpaved tread is rocky in places and is rated easy to moderate; it is not wheelchair accessible. The North Rim is reached by a long drive from the South Rim and has seasonal road access, with the road closed in winter. There is no separate activity fee for this trail, though park entrance fees may apply. Leashed pets are allowed. The route stays near a steep, weathered canyon rim; some overlooks in the park have no guardrail, so keep back from the edge and watch children closely.
