Rock Point

Overview

Rock Point Overlook is a short, rim-side walk on the South Rim that pays off with one of the canyon’s most dramatic perspectives. The path is about 0.4 miles round trip and typically takes around 30 minutes, dipping gently through scrub and oak brush to a fenced viewpoint.

What You’ll See

• The Narrows: a striking constriction where the canyon pinches tight and drops precipitously toward the Gunnison River.
• Ancient canyon walls: dark, banded “basement rock” carved by the river, among the oldest exposed rocks on the continent.
• A sweeping cross-canyon line of sight toward features on the North Rim, with distant glimpses of the West Elk Mountains.

Getting There

Rock Point sits along South Rim Road between Cross Fissures View and Devils Lookout, reached by a short spur path from the roadside. There’s a small parking area right at the start of the path. Services are not provided at the overlook; plan to use facilities near the visitor center or campground before you head out.

Seasonality & Closures

This stretch of South Rim Road closes to vehicles in winter from Gunnison Point to High Point, which includes Rock Point. If you want to drive to the overlook, plan your visit outside the winter closure period.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

Among the South Rim viewpoints, Rock Point is the spot to really feel how abruptly the land falls away into the gorge. If you’re prioritizing a few overlooks, this one is a smart pick for a big view-to-effort ratio and a clear look into the canyon’s tightest section.

Best Time to Visit

Late-day light adds depth and color to the dark rock, and sunset here can be especially memorable. Midday can be harsh for photos. Aim for weekdays or early/late hours for a quieter experience.

Wildlife Note

Black bears inhabit the rim plateaus. Stay alert, keep food secured, and give any wildlife plenty of space.
