Overview

Gunnison Point is the South Rim’s quick win: a short stroll from the Visitor Center to a dramatic, guardrail-protected perch over the Black Canyon. You get that sheer, vertigo-inducing drop and a straight shot to the river far below without committing to a long hike.

What You’ll See

Expect towering, dark canyon walls and the Gunnison River threading through the depths. This spot serves up the park’s signature narrowness and depth in one glance—exactly the kind of instant perspective that’s hard to grasp until you’re standing on the rim.

Getting There & Nearby Trails

It’s directly behind the South Rim Visitor Center. From here, you can link short walks along the rim or hop onto nearby trails such as Oak Flat Loop or Rim Rock to keep the views rolling.

Seasonality & Access

The Visitor Center is open year-round with exhibits and ranger staff, and Gunnison Point remains a go-to stop in all seasons. In winter and early spring, the South Rim Drive closes to vehicles just past the Visitor Center, so this point often becomes the de facto end of the road. In 2024–2025, expect construction-related delays and tighter parking near the South Rim hub.

Wildlife

Bring binoculars—this is a solid birding area. Raptors and other birds ride the thermals along the cliffs, and quiet mornings tend to be best for sightings.

Best Time to Visit

Early or late in the day to sidestep crowds and catch softer light on the walls. Weekdays are calmer than weekends, and winter visits can be wonderfully quiet (just plan around the road closure beyond the Visitor Center).

Need-to-Know

• The overlook is exposed with little shade—pack water and sun protection.
• Cell service can be spotty on the rim.
• The Visitor Center has exhibits, maps, and seasonal services, plus wilderness permits if you’re eyeing an inner-canyon adventure.
