Overview

This 8.7 km/5.4 mile loop strings together the Blue Mountains’ greatest hits: towering sandstone cliffs, thundering waterfalls, and cool rainforest gullies. It’s a Grade 4 (hard) route with plenty of steep stairs and rough sections, but the payoff is huge—iconic Grose Valley panoramas from Govetts Leap Lookout and intimate moments beside creeks and falls.

Route Highlights

Most walkers start at Blackheath (easy by train) and wander through Pope’s Glen before joining the Cliff Top Track toward Govetts Leap Lookout. From there, you’ll pass vantage points like Barrow Lookout (a prime angle onto Govetts Leap/Bridal Veil Falls) and Horseshoe Falls Lookout, then return via quieter bush, including the Braeside Walk and Braeside Fire Trail. Expect a mix of cliff-top heath, eucalypt forest, and lush gullies with photogenic stepping-stone creek crossings.

Difficulty & Trail Conditions

Call it rugged rather than technical: long stair runs, sharp ascents/descents near the falls, and some uneven, slippery patches after rain. While signage exists, you’ll want a map or offline notes—intersections and variations can be confusing. Sections near the main lookouts draw crowds, but much of the loop is blissfully quiet.

Facilities & Logistics

Toilets are available at Govetts Leap Lookout; otherwise services are limited, and there are no water refill points on the loop. If arriving by train, the track is reachable on foot from Blackheath Station—use local streets to pick up Pope’s Glen (walk down Gardiner Crescent past the library toward Memorial Park). If you’re driving, start at the Govetts Leap Lookout car park.

Best Time to Hike

It’s walkable year‑round, but autumn and spring bring milder temps and wildflowers. Rainforest pockets stay pleasantly cool in summer. Skip this loop during or right after heavy rain—slippery rock, creek crossings, and exposed edges are a poor combo. Early starts beat lookout crowds and give softer light across the Grose Valley.

Tips

• Download a map; reception can be patchy. On the cliff-top section, following signs toward Evans Lookout and keeping the Grose Valley to your left is a simple orientation check.
• Bring plenty of water and snacks; none on route.
• Wear grippy footwear—many stairs and some slick rock. Take care near unfenced drop-offs.
• No pets on this trail.
