This is the Blue Mountains’ cliff‑edge greatest hits: a rim‑top wander between Govetts Leap Lookout and Evans Lookout with non‑stop Grose Valley drama. It’s a moderate Grade 3 track, best tackled as a 4.0‑mile (6.3 km) total out‑and‑back, or done one‑way with a car shuffle. Expect about 2–3 hours depending on pace and photo stops.
Route and Terrain
The path is well‑formed natural surface—compacted dirt and sandstone—with frequent stone steps and a few short, steeper pinches near lookouts. You’ll cross Govetts Leap Brook near the falls and undulate along the escarpment rather than grind a big climb; figure on roughly 200 m of rolling gain across the full return. The track is well signposted and straightforward in good weather, but it’s exposed in places and can turn slippery after rain.
Scenery and Wildlife
Views are the whole point here: towering sandstone walls, the deep Grose Valley, and layered ridgelines in every direction. Lookouts string the route—Govetts Leap, Barrow Lookout, Evans Lookout—each a different angle on the same grand stage. At Govetts Leap Falls, wind often blows the plume back up the cliff, misting the lookout on otherwise dry days. Spring brings bright heathland wildflowers among eucalypts, and birders should listen for Yellow‑tailed Black Cockatoos cruising the valley edge.
Logistics and Parking
Start from either Govetts Leap Lookout (near the Heritage Centre) or Evans Lookout. Both ends have parking and toilets. If you can, arrange a car shuffle to walk it one‑way without backtracking; otherwise, turn around at Evans or Govetts and retrace the cliff top. If Evans Lookout parking is busy, the nearby Grand Canyon car park is another option. No permit is needed to walk; parking fees may apply at the lookouts.
Best Time to Hike
Late winter into spring (August–October) is prime: comfortable temps, blooming wildflowers, and reliably good visibility. Spring and autumn generally beat summer heat and fire risk. For softer light and thinner crowds, go early morning on weekends or aim for weekdays. If it’s just rained, the falls will likely be spectacular—just mind slick rock and steps.
Tips and Safety
This is a popular track; expect company, especially on weekends and holidays. Carry sun and wind protection—parts of the escarpment are very exposed—and enough water. Official guidance recommends lodging a trip intention form, carrying a PLB, and bringing a topo map or GPS in poor weather. Dogs aren’t permitted. If you’ve got more gas in the tank, many hikers link this with the Grand Canyon Track for a standout half‑day combo.
