Govetts Leap lookout

Govetts Leap is an accessible cliff-edge lookout above the Grose Valley at Blackheath, with sheer sandstone walls framing a wide view into the deep valley. It's a good choice when you want a major escarpment view without starting a bushwalk: the short paths to the lookout are easy and accessible. The area can close during poor weather or fire danger, so check park alerts before setting out.

Bridal Veil waterfall is east of the lookout and drops about 180 m to the base of the cliff. You can see the falls against the forest and escarpment, though the visible spray varies with water and weather. Sunrise is a popular time, but cloud can hide the eastern view, so clear conditions matter more than the clock. For a photo, frame the waterfall with the cliff and sweep of the Grose Valley rather than isolating a thin ribbon of water.

The lookout is also the start of five walking tracks: Fairfax Heritage, Govetts Leap descent, Pulpit, Rodriguez Pass and Cliff Top. That makes it easy to pair a quick viewpoint stop with a longer walk. If you're here for the panorama, the lookout itself is the payoff; you don't have to take one of the tracks to get the view.

Picnic tables and toilets make this a useful place to pause. Parking is beside the lookout, but visitors give mixed reports about how much room there is, and several say spaces can be tight, especially for larger vehicles. Expect the lot to feel constrained at busy times rather than counting on an easy space.

A remnant patch of mountain blue gums grows in the area. Early bushwalkers helped save it for future generations, an important part of the local story behind a place people now know mostly for its cliffs and waterfall.

King parrots and yellow-tailed black cockatoos are among the birds to watch for around the lookout. The cockatoo's distinctive 'weela weela' call can carry across the valley.
