Starting near Blackheath Memorial Park, this well‑marked track follows Popes Glen Creek through lush forest to the dramatic escarpment around Govetts Leap. It’s commonly walked as an out‑and‑back, about 3.7 miles total (around 6 km return) if you go from the park to Govetts Leap and back. Expect mostly gentle grades, good signage, and a classic Blue Mountains mix of creekside shade and cliff‑top vistas.
Much of the walk hugs Popes Glen Creek, with ferny gullies, mossy rocks, and the odd small cascade after rain. Boyd Beach—a sandy, rock‑rimmed pool on the creek—is a delightful pause point. As you near the escarpment, the bush gives way to sweeping Grose Valley views; extend a little to take in the lookouts around Govetts Leap. Along the way you’ll encounter weathered sandstone outcrops and occasional pagoda‑style formations typical of the region.
Underfoot it’s a formed bush track with bridges and steps. The walking is easy to moderate overall, but the final approach to the escarpment includes steeper rock stairs that get slick in the wet. After rain, expect damp or muddy patches and a few narrow or slightly overgrown sections.
This one works year‑round. Spring brings wildflowers and lively bird activity; after rain the creek and cascades are at their prettiest (and the track is at its dampest). It’s generally a quieter option than nearby headline tracks, but early starts still pay off on weekends.
Park at Blackheath Memorial Park (near the pool) or walk 10–15 minutes from Blackheath Station and follow signs along Prince Edward Street to the trailhead. Toilets and picnic facilities are at the park; none on the track. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip. No pets, and it’s not wheelchair accessible. If you want to make a day of it, link Popes Glen with the Cliff Top Track, Braeside Track, or even the Grand Canyon Track for a bigger loop and more lookouts.
You’ll be walking through a catchment with active community bushcare—ongoing restoration has focused on weeding and removing invasive pines to help native vegetation rebound.
