Chapel of St Lesmo

Overview

St Lesmo's Chapel is a small 19th‑century estate chapel tucked into the trees of the Glen Tanar Estate, right in the Cairngorms. It feels intimate and serene—more a quiet pause on a woodland wander than a busy landmark.

Brief History

Built for the Brooks family and consecrated in 1871, the chapel began life with an unusual heather‑thatched roof. It later became part of the estate held by George Coats (the first Lord Glentanar). The dedication honors St Lesmo, a local hermit believed to have lived here in the 8th century.

Wildlife & Setting

Glen Tanar’s woods are alive with red squirrels, roe deer, and woodland birds. Dawn and dusk are your best odds for sightings, and the quiet around the chapel helps your chances.

Logistics

There’s no parking or facilities at the chapel itself—use the Glen Tanar Visitor Centre for parking and restrooms, then walk to the chapel. Entry to the interior isn’t guaranteed; as a private estate chapel it’s sometimes closed or in use for services or weddings. Treat the building and grounds with respect.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon brings soft light for photos of stonework and stained glass, fewer people, and better wildlife activity. Spring and autumn color the woods beautifully; year‑round it’s a calm stop on a Glen Tanar walk.
