Plan your stop

Before you go

Plan around the access

Getting to Hans Flat from UT-24 means about 45 miles of dirt road; Millard Canyon is another 0.9 mile along NP-633. This is Maze backcountry, not a quick stop off the park's paved roads. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for the Maze approach; high-clearance 4WD is required on the Flint Trail and roads below it. Conditions can change after rain and cell service is unreliable, so check road advice before you head in. There are no facilities at the pullout; restrooms and a picnic table are back at Hans Flat. Pets are prohibited in the Maze, even in vehicles.

More about Millard Canyon Overlook

A small stop in the MazeMillard Canyon Overlook is a named roadside viewpoint on NP-633, the dirt road from Hans Flat…

Millard Canyon Overlook is a named roadside viewpoint on NP-633, the dirt road from Hans Flat toward the Flint Trail. It is the first of three overlooks on the route, about 0.9 mile past Hans Flat Ranger Station. If you are already driving into the Maze, this is a quick walk to a broad canyon view; it is not a sensible reason by itself to make the long trip.

Walk to the rimFrom the pullout, follow a sandy path about 250 feet to the rim.

From the pullout, follow a sandy path about 250 feet to the rim. The view looks down between red sandstone walls over a shrub-dotted canyon floor, with a distant plateau on the horizon. The edge has no railing. A wide photo from the end of the path can hold the close cliffs and the canyon floor in the same frame.
